Ubuntu 10.04 is out and trust me its out with a bang. The new OS looks really cool in its new theme or avatar ill call is awsome. Lets look at some of the new features and updates.

Installation

Installation is extremly easy and even a novice can do it. And if your system is connected with the internet it will also download and instal all the updates while installing. During installation it will ask for your country, Time Zone,Keyboard Layout, Partition Info etc. It will also search your windows partition and gave you the option to copy settings from your windows desktop in my case it worked perfectly and it copied my wallpaer and documents folder etc continuing with installation installer will complete the installation in seven steps and some 15-20 mins on a decent system with 2GB RAM. If you have Windows installed it will automatically create a dual boot using GRUB and you dont have to worry regarding partitions or data loss as installer will take care of that.

Booting

My good this was something booting is extremly fast on my old system it takes less than five seconds to show my desktop and i am ready to roll. Ubuntu team has worked really hard on booting time i remember in days of 8.04 it used to take minimum 20 seconds to boot.

Desktop

Desktop looks neat and beautiful in new Default Ubuntu theme running on gnome which is called Ambiance. You have the standard Applications, Places and System tool bar as well as the power options bar on the right top. The new desktop manager is very easy to operate. It is bundled with all the standard gnome apps. And if you are a kde lover you can download KDE as well or try Kbuntu.

Internet and Social Networking

Ubuntu is ready with internet with latest version of firefox, Empathy IM client which supports your gmail, yahoo, msn, live and even Facebook Chat and provides a single window from chat and you can easily change your status and picture fom top bar. It also come with gwibber using which you can broadcast on your tweet and facebook accounts. For email you Evolution the default option.

Multimedia

By default you cannot play your mp3 and mpeg video files but it take few seconds to download codec for these files and you are ready to roll by default it provides you with Rythmbox for playing audio and Totem for playing video but ill recommend you to download Amarok for audio and VLC for video. Ubuntu has also added ubuntu music store from where you can purchase music etc.

Office & Productivity

For office you have the usual choice openoffice which is now Oracle open office after the accusition of Sun by Oracle. The office suite dose a decent job and if you want to try diffrent you can also download abiword and koffice from Ubuntu Software Centre.

Overall

Last word is ubuntu 10.04 is refined product with three year LTS support from ubuntu its seems a great option for home and even Enterprise. Its neatly packaged and is amazingly fast you also have the standard compiz 3D Desktop affects which adds the glamour and the standard administration and configuration options which are farely easy to use. Overall undoubtly the best Linux desktop ever.

How to install apps through disc without dependency errors in Linux

This is a very common issue which Linux users face when they try to install any package from a CD or DVD they always have dependency errors as the package manger only tries to install the package you selected and if there are dependency issue it will not look for the required file either on CD (even if they are presnet in the disc) so to resolve this issue there is a Hack we can make the disc which contains package looks like a online repositry to the package manager. In this case we are doing it with YUM.
First you need to reate a dvd.repo text file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ with the following content:

What is yum ?
Yum or Yellow dog Update, Modified is a package manager that was developed by Duke University to improve the installation of RPMs. Yum searches numerous repositories for packages and their dependencies so they may be installed together in an effort to alleviate dependency issues. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 uses yum to fetch packages and install RPMs.Yum uses a configuration file at /etc/yum.conf. Also refer yum(8) man page for more information.There are multiple ways by which you can install a repository on the system and install/update packages :
- Add an existing repository
- Setup a new repository having packages populated from ISO’s downloaded from RHN
- Register the system on RHN and subscribe to the channels depending on the subscription you have.How do I use it?

Ubuntu 9.04, also known as the Jaunty Jackalope comes in three different versions desktop, server and a new Netbook remix specially designed for Netbooks. Ubuntu 9.04 was released on April 23 and millions of hackers and users started there download immediately and here I am with full fledged review.

Desktop Review
For the past few years now, I've recommended Ubuntu as the best overall desktop Linux option, in large part due to its large catalog of ready-to-install applications and its excellent online resources for locating support information. Version 9.04 remains a very good choice for desktop deployments, but in certain circumstances, Ubuntu's software enhancements come with some drawbacks. For example, Ubuntu 9.04 includes Version 1.6 of the X.Org graphics server, which improves performance for some graphics adapters while breaking compatibility with AMD's proprietary drivers (and thereby disabling hardware-accelerated 3-D support) for other cards. I had this experience on a desktop system with an ATI RV410 X700 adapter that I upgraded to Jaunty from the previous Ubuntu release, Intrepid. But on the other hand Ubuntu now does a good-enough job auto-detecting display and graphics hardware (including multi monitor setups) that Ubuntu systems typically don't require an xorg.conf configuration file. Also along the lines of making its graphics configuration less arcane, 9.04 is the first Ubuntu release to do away with the Vulcan-death-grip Ctrl-Alt-Backspace key combination that you can use on most Linux distributions to dislodge misbehaving graphical applications by killing your X server session. Once upon a time, this came in handy fairly often, and the fact that it's become an anachronism is a mark of Linux's maturity.
In addition to support for Microsoft's MAPI Exchange protocol, the GNOME 2.26 release with which Ubuntu 9.04 ships includes a new volume control applet with a horizontal slider and an integrated interface for switching among sound themes (or silencing them), an overhauled disc burning application, and a handful of other enhancements laid out here.
While I was able to opt for Ext4 from Ubuntu's LiveCD-based installer, this installer still lacks support for building an Ubuntu system with encrypted partitions. To install a system with encrypted partitions, it's necessary to use Ubuntu's text-based alternate installer. Considering that even the buttoned-down Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 now includes an option for encrypting hard drives in its regular graphical installer, there isn't any reason why Ubuntu's default installer shouldn't offer users this important security option.

Remix Review
Ubuntu 9.04 also is available in a netbook remix edition, which sports a set of user interface components that have been designed to work well on 10-inch and smaller displays.I used a utility available in Ubuntu's repositories, called usb-imagewriter, to turn a 1GB USB memory stick into an installer and live test environment for Jaunty's netbook remix edition.I tried out the stick on an Dell Mini 10 with a 10-inch display, and I found that the remixed Jaunty release did indeed make the most of the small screen. The system did away with the familiar desktop, window and menu structure, and offered me instead an interface more akin to a smartphone.When I followed one of the application or location links laid out on my home screen, the application or file manager window would fill the whole screen. A small bar atop the display contained links I could use to bring other open applications to the front or to push everything to the back and expose the home screen again.
Server Review
Ubuntu is also a solid option for server implementations, but in the past Canonical hasn't done as much to set Ubuntu apart from other Linux server options as it has to distinguish its distribution on the desktop.
This appears to be changing, as Version 9.04 ships with what's meant to be a turnkey mail server role based on the dovecot IMAP server and postfix mail transport agent. These two pieces of software—which, respectively, handle mail receiving and mail sending—are developed separately and typically distributed separately, as well. In the server flavor of Ubuntu 9.04, the two components are bundled together to streamline configuration. However, at this point, the mail server configuration is far from turnkey, and I couldn't find any official documentation available for the dovecot-postfix bundle. In the community-provided portion of the Ubuntu documentation wiki, I found several how-tos regarding these mail components, but a polished mail server role for Ubuntu remains a work in progress.Along similar lines, I would like to see the project come up with a turnkey directory server implementation, based on LDAP, Fedora Directory Server or perhaps Red Hat's FreeIPA project. As Microsoft has demonstrated with Active Directory, well-integrated directory services can be a powerful addition to a server operating system and can make life easier when implementing other server roles, such as mail services.

Ubuntu 9.04 also includes a string of updates to the distribution's virtualization hosting stack. Like Red Hat, the Ubuntu project has trained the bulk of its virtualization focus on KVM, the hypervisor that's built directly into the Linux kernel.As with most other Linux distributions, Ubuntu 9.04 also ships with virt-manger, a graphical virtualization management tool that comes out of Red Hat's Emerging Technology group. This tool is flagged as experimental, but it works well for basic creation and monitoring of virtual machines running atop either KVM or Xen.

Suse Linux 11 Enterprise Desktop review

The much anticipated Suse Linux Enterprise desktop is finally Out. I worked on Beta and it was not what i expected from Novell lets check weather the final release gives us the same expiernece or not.

For my evaluation of SLED 11, I used Dell Latitude D630 with 3GB of RAM and nvidia 8400gs graphic card. This is the standard system I had been using for Windows Vista and Windows 7 testing.
At first look, Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (SLED 11) is exactly same like openSUSE 11.1. But does SLED 11 have the extra polish and the value add to justify its position as Novell’s premier enterprise desktop OS? We need to figure that out.
First, let’s start with the good. Since SLED 11 is heavily based on openSUSE 11, which is a modern and completely up-to-date Linux distribution. it has all the features of that product along with a number of commercial enhancements:
* Commercial fonts have been licensed from AGFA Monotype Imaging which match the same typefaces that in Windows and Microsoft Office, so that documents imported into Novell’s enhanced OpenOffice.org build in SLED 11 render in a more native fashion than with the basic OpenOffice.org build.
* SLED 11 includes the commercial Citrix Presentation Server (XenApp) ICA client for remote access to Windows and Linux applications on Citrix XenApp servers.
* Sun Java JRE 1.6 is included along with the Java Web Start plugin for Firefox.
* Adobe Flash Player 10 commercial license plug in included.
* Commercial Fluendo Gstreamer codec for AAC has been included for compatability with iPod m4a files in the Banshee media player.
* Post General Availability, free copies of Likewise Enterprise will be available for download for enhanced Active Directory integration (In other words, Novell’s own basic Winbind integration in SLED is still insufficient for widespread enterprise deployment, this despite several years into their interoperability alliance with Microsoft)
* The Evolution mail client now supports Exchange 2007 mail and calendaring and Novell’s own GroupWise 8 enterprise messaging platform via native MAPI. Various improvements which were initially introduced with prior versions of openSUSE are also included in SLED 11:
* Clone installations and network deployments of SLED 11 and SLES 11 can be accomplished thru AutoYaST (a process similar to Redhat’s Kickstart) or via image distribution with Novell’s ZENWorks Linux Management product version 7.3.
* Support for Microsoft .NET API with Mono, which is showcased in SLED 11 with the integrated Beagle desktop search, the Banshee media player, the Tomboy. note taker and F-Spot photo manager applications included with the release.
* Initial Silverlight and Microsoft WMA support with Moonlight 1.0 release.
* Support for enhanced power managment and CPU throttling
* A new PolicyKit GUI that allows for fine tuned User Access Control — restrict use of devices and desktop/OS privileges.
* “Technology Previews” of the Xen and KVM virtualization hypervisors.
* “One-Click Install” of applications from the openSUSE build service website.

And now, the bad part
* The installation process itself was uneventful and straightforward, and is nearly identical to openSUSE’s. The main difference is that you have less package selection choice as SLED is a subset of openSUSE in terms of functionality, so certain things like legacy KDE 3.5 desktop support and more comprehensive developer packages are not included. The lack of developer packages or at least an option to include a package feed during install time is an omission I take
serious issue with, as the environment should be self-hosting as a development platform.

* Additionally, the system prompts you to accept licenses for the various commercially licensed add-ons listed above.
* The first problem I ran into was that the automatic nVidia driver install during the second stage installation process yielded a completely unusable system
with an X Window server that refused to start. I had to go into the Xorg.conf file and revert the driver back to Xorg’s “nv” driver instead of the proprietary “nvidia” driver modules to get the GUI to start up again.
* The next issue I had was a repeat performance of what happened to me with openSUSE 11.1 back in December — the default firewall settings are too aggressive and block SMB filesharing, and SLED’s samba services aren’t started by default, so Windows networking is broken out of the box. How they did not catch this through beta testing absolutely bewilders me, because this is very basic functionality for an enterprise desktop, particularly one which is geared towards
being a drop-in Windows replacement. Did I fix it? Yeah, all it required was disabling the firewall and turning the samba services on as the superuser(root), but your typical end-user in an enterprise environment would have no clue how as how to do this, let alone your typical openSUSE user. If Novell is assuming the enterprise or the OEM would do this during image or scripted install deployment, it’s a stupid assumption because not everyone is going to deploy
desktops this way.
* My next major problem was installing 3rd-party applications written for SUSE. I tried installing Sun’s xVM VirtualBox by double-clicking on the downloaded RPM file, only to discover that there were unresolvable package dependencies because the “pango-devel” pre-requisite package was not installed. Okay, so I attempted to do a “zypper install pango-devel” from the command line while logged in as the superuser. BZZT! “no such package“. Wha? Not even on the SLED 11 DVD? I was able to resolve this by adding the openSUSE base repository using “zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/ opensuse111”
, installed the update repository with “zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.1/ opensuse111-updates” and then issuing the “zypper install pango-devel” command to resolve the dependency. After installing the pre-requisite package, I was able to double-click on the VirtualBox RPM file to install it on the system and run the program.
* The openSUSE repository came in handy later because I kept getting various errors about the Intel audio chipset sound device not working. A “zypper update” yielded several hundred megabytes of package updates and fixed the sound problem.

While the technology itself in SLED 11 is impressive, Novell clearly has a lot of work to do before I can recommend deployment of SLED 11 as an enterprise desktop. Are these issues fixable? Yes, but I recommend that the openSUSE and SLE developer teams work much more closely together and rationalize their development processes, and that new usability studies be commissioned in order to flush out problems that might emerge in typical usage scenarios, and not usage by geeks or Linux enthusiasts.

You've been thinking about installing Windows 7 Beta 1 now that it's totally available to anyone. Well, here's our complete guide to grabbing, installing and playing with Windows 7—it's (mostly) painless, so no excuses!

Are You Ready?
First thing's first—you might be tired of XP, but can your computer handle Windows 7? Probably! Here are the minimum requirements:
• 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
• 1 GB of system memory
• 16 GB of available disk space
• Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
• DVD-R/W Drive (actually not necessary)

Where to Get It
Microsoft is obviously the first stop to getting Windows 7. you can download it from connect.microsoft.com or from msdn or technet. where you'll pick either 32 or 64-bit version. If you have 4GB of RAM or more, get 64-bit. You'll need your Live ID and Microsoft will want some info about you, but just lie or tell the truth or whatever, and you'll be taken to a download page with your product key and you are ready to downlaod the ISO file.

Even if Microsoft's own servers are crumbling under the strain of surprisingly strong demand (though I downloaded at 1MB/sec just fine), you can always hit BitTorrent. You're looking for Windows 7 Beta 1, build 7000. Other benefit to torrent: It'll still be available after Microsoft's Jan. 24 deadline and you don't need a Microsoft Live ID. But you will need to get your own product key.

Getting Stuff Ready
Windows 7, from everything we've heard is surprisingly stable beta, and it's easy to upgrade from Vista, since it happens automagically. However, that doesn't mean you should run it as your sole OS (especially on your work computer), because your programs might not work with it (they should, but you never know), crash possibilities and other unknown unknowns. should dual boot it, meaning you'll be able to run either OS at startup. Luckily, Ihackintosh has a step-by-step guide to doing just that.

It works especially nicely if you have two hard drives in a desktop (like me), but most likely, you'll have to partition. Keep in mind if you're partitioning a single hard drive, the minimum space for Windows 7 is 16GB, and you'll probably want more room than that. Again, ihackintosh has the complete details, but the short version is that in Vista, run "Computer Management" from the Start Menu and you can complete all of the partition voodoo from Disk Management, like shrinking your current volume to give your new Windows 7 partition that minimum 16GB of breathing room. And you know, actually creating the fresh partition for Windows 7. (Do that now, and remember which one it is!) For XP, you'll need the GParted Live CD, which you burn to a CD, restart, boot from disc, and do the partition thang.

How to Get Windows 7 on Your computer
After getting install downloaded and hard drive prepped, you've got a couple of options for actually getting Windows 7 onto your computer. The first, and easiest, is to make a Windows 7 disc by burning the image to a DVD using something like ImgBurn.

If you're installing Windows 7 on a Mac, you can burn the image to a DVD with Disk Utility.

Or, you can do what I'm doing since I'm out of blank DVDs at the moment, and put it on a flash drive for installation. This is also how you'll get it on a netbook or MacBook Air. You'll need a 4GB USB 2.0 flash drive and a mounting program like Daemon Tools on Windows or MountMe on Mac. Format the flash drive in FAT32, mount the Windows 7 image, then copy everything over to the flash drive.

Installing
Hello easy part! Pop in your disc or your flash drive. Boot from it, and follow the wizard, installing Windows 7 on your clean partition (under Custom installation type). On a Mac, Boot Camp Assistant will take you through the process after you slide in the Windows disc. Make sure it's the right partition or you will hose your actual current Windows install. Then go watch some TV or take a poop while it does its thing. Come back, and you'll have a few more setup screens—hope you wrote your license key down!—then you'll be up and rolling with Windows 7.

Now what?
The initial setup is fast and easy, but you might wanna check out your driver situation. Mac users, for instance, have a little bit of work ahead of them, since you'll have to install drivers from the OS X disc, and if you're running 64-bit, download the Boot Camp 2.1 update.

Well, there's a lot to check out in Windows 7. Like the new Media Center, which has 10 new features we're really hyped about, like sweet dissolve effects, turboscrolling, virtual channels and remote copying.

The new taskbar is one of its major new UI features that's both exciting and at first a little confusing, since it works a lot differently than the taskbar you're used. Checking out Microsoft's video tour before you jump might save you some frustration. There's also Aero Shake, which knocks all the clutter off your desktop instantly; Snap, with its instant window resizing; and Peek, which is like turbocharged thumbnail previews.

Dell is so tight lipped with details, they wouldn't even answer a question asking what class of laptops this falls under (see: luxury product). We don't know much about the laptop so far, but the Model had no problem holding it up with one hand, so I'd assume it's pretty light. Dell also said something about using high quality materials in the design, and I'm guessing this thing is going to be super expensive. One of the biggest announcment in this year CES is the Dell Mini 10 and it actually has some decent features, which include a 720p screen with end-to-end glass and a TV Tuner.

That beautiful 13.3-inch Dell XPS M1330 which i personally own since 2007 just got a couple of potential successors -- the Studio XPS 1340 and Studio XPS 1640, the latter being a 16-inch version.

Base specifications for both models start with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz P8400 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB hard drive running at a decent 7,200rpm, LED-backlit display, slot-loading DVD burner, integrated 2-megapixel webcam and 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium.

The 16-inch 1640 model offers an option, however, to upgrade the RGB LED LCD display to a true 16:9-format version, rocking 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution. And instead of the 1340's Nvidia 9400M or 9500M graphics, it offers ATI's Mobility Radeon M86XT card, featuring 512MB of graphics memory.

Lenovo's IdeaCentre 600 is a pretty splashy debut: Its first ever all-in-one is a simple curved slab that's supposedly the thinnest all-in-one in the industry.

Beyond the form factor—which borrows liberally from the new Star Trek and the iMac (the frameless black bezel looks like it was copy and pasted)—it's actually a disappointingly standard all-in-one affair, with a smallish 21.5-inch screen and nothing you can't get on the new Vaio LV or Dell XPS one. And it's missing, at least from the spec sheet, one of the Vaio's killer features—HDMI in and hand sensor in XPS one which illuminates the LED's when your hand hover around them. Still it does have an awesome Swiss Army knife of a remote—it's an air mouse, accelerometer controller for games and Skype VOIP(wii style) handset (it acts like a cordless phone).

It starts at $999, but all the cool stuff (like Blu-ray) is add-ons, so it'll probably get pricey pretty fast.

First 24 hours with open suse 11 (KDE4)

This is the first of hopefully the first of a few posts on my experiences using openSUSE 11.0 (with KDE 4). This post features download experiences as well as the installation review.

Abstract: Using openSUSE 11, it’s clear that we are in the company of “men” as opposed to “boys” (Ubuntu and PCLOS etc). Sadly, I find myself more a “boy” than “man” while using this distro and feel that openSUSE 11 is certainly NOT a beginner friendly distro… but made for committed Linux users and experimenters.

Brief information about my system: I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad, with (ONLY) 512 RAM and about 10 GB partition for Linux. Oh yes, I mainly use Windows XP (thus I am dual-booting).

Part I: The Download Story

Last night, at 10:00pm, I began my attempt to download the openSUSE 11 DVD using metalink. I’ve been a strong supporter of metalinks and have personally seen them dramatically improve download rates and stability. Sadly, my attempt to download the openSUSE 11 metalink was faced with failure (much like my previous attempt to dowload openSUSE 10.3 using this format). It turns out that Orbit Downloader, the programme I use to download metalinks, seems to have a problem. Whenever I tried to download the DVD (4+ GB), it would allow me to download only 243 MB. It turned out an Orbit problem because the metalink worked with DownThemALL (Firefox extension) and GetRight (a paid download manager). Sadly, each time I tried to download the openSUSE metalink using DownThemAll or GetRight, my Windows kept crashing. This was all-too-mysterious for late in the night and I finally settled to reinstall Orbit Downloader and tried to download the DVD link directly (without Metalink). This time it worked (allowing me to download the full 4+ GB). Sadly, in the morning, about 8 hours later, I found out that Orbit had only downloaded 50% and was giving my speeds of 2 KB/s!!! No luck, I saw.. and resolved to finally download the openSUSE KDE4-Live CD instead.

Part II: The installation story

By 11:00am, I had my openSUSE 11 iso burned and ready for installation. I took detailed notes on each step and the following is a step-by-step guide to what happened.

11:15am - MEDIACHECK

The Mediacheck (checking CD for defects) took about 5 minutes. And thankfully the download and burning was ok (phew!)

Sadly, when it said “press any key to reboot” I pressed any key and the computer didn’t do anything, it was just frozen. I had to do a force restart. (bug or just me?… hmmm… not a good start).

11:21am - Starting LIVE CD

Since my laptop is a little slow (512 MB), it took about 4 minutes for the LIVE CD to launch.

11:25-11:42 - Experimenting with Live CD and beginning installation (partitioning etc).

I spent some time with the pre-installation configurations, especially paying attention to the partitioning table. Interestingly, openSUSE did an excellent job to present a default partition table, but I just had to make sure that everything was alright… so I did my own configuration manually.

Interestingly for me, my time-region was not Calcutta (India), but Kolkota (one of the only distro’s I have seen to have the politically correct name of the time-zone).

11:42am to 11:51 - Installation

I was quite sad that I was using the CD instead of the DVD because there were no software options in the installation configurations (the openSUSE DVD installer has always been exceedingly excellent and powerful, giving users full control over what they want). Still, the installer was fast and the installation process was fast as well. I couldn’t imagine that the openSUSE installation could take about 10 minutes!!! earlier versions have seen me sit for over three hours during openSUSE installations. Things have changed… and that’s great.

11:51am - Reboot

As usual, the openSUSE GRUB was excellent giving me no problems. I’m quite confident that it could have recognised other distros if I had them.

Upon rebooting, the autoconfiguration got going and in about 7 minutes I had completed my openSUSE installation.

11:58am - Problems begin… mainly no internet!

I am spoiled by the “boy” distros, where internet connection is so easy, especially Ubuntu and PCLinux (and of course Linux Mint). But openSUSE really gave me the run around.

Firstly, there was no short-cut, upon installation, for configuration tool. Therefore, becasue I remembered, I went to YAST. But no matter how much network configuration I did, I was just not able to get my internet going.

I decided to use the local wireless to configure and interestingly, there was no wireless problem for openSUSE. That worked seamlessly.Except I couldn’t update on “battery” I was told! whaaat?

Anyway, I figured out that I had to use Knetworkmanager to configure, but even then I realised that I had to allow auto-host through DHCP. Well… that was a lot of trial and error and ultimately by 12:48pm, my wired network was working.

Off to lunch!

AFTER LUNCH CONFIGURATIONS…

Back after lunch, I chose to do my personalised configurations… like wallpapers and flash-plugin for firefox. But the flashplugin would install, I’d restart my browser, and find it not installed. I decided to install using the multimedia codecs downloads. But the repositories were all too slow for me… I had selected about six… so I brought them down to four: OS, NON-OS, General update, Packman And that helped.

The configuration, like Desktop etc was quite different from KDE 3.5 and needed me to get used to… still I’d rather work on this than 3.5. (Plasma, the KDE4 desktop thingy, has crashed ONLY once for me! :) )

For non-free codecs (yes, yes, I’ve sold out), the openSUSE community website has a one-click link for multimedia proprietory codecs, which was a relief.

Then began the other installations, like SAMBA and HP drivers (to allow me to work on my network) and also the other small packages, including some KDE games. But all that took a lot of time, because the repositories kept crashing (I had to keep retrying and sometimes start the whole process again) Even as I write, that special software process is still going on, and I’m hoping it will finish in a few minutes so that I can go home.

The biggest disappointment after installation was that the repositories didn’t seem to have Firefox 3, and I had to install the manually through the Mozilla site. I haven’t had the heart to install the manual version at the moment, for fear of doing some damage. I’ll wait for all my updates and then get my Firefox updated as well.

The time now is 6:00pm… and I’m tired… and guilty… because I haven’t done much of my ACTUAL work. But still, this was fun, and openSUSE looks good, looks really good. But like I said above, the distro is not for the faint-hearted or pure beginners. I have installed openSUSE earlier, and that experience helped (because openSUSE is not like other distros). I’m still a newbie or a noob, though, and so, I have struggled where others might fly through. Still, I think the distro looks/feels solid and I can’t wait to actually start working with it… tomorrow!

Hey guys since last one month i am doing regular gymming because of my cholesterol issues When i started my weight was 106 and after 40 days its 92. I am also on liquid diet which helped me to reach where i am today. My daily schedule is running 10 kms in 40*2 Min's, cycling for 30 mins, rowing for 10 mins on maximum power and add few weights to that and some yoga. The most amazing thing is when i started my cholesterol was 282 and now its 170 which is perfect . as the normal range is between 150-200. Now my next target is to reach at 85 i hope that happens in next 10-15 days.

Day progressed and as i got reports everything was fine with flue but doctor warned me about my high cholesterol level. He explained me that i am only Twenty One and already have tendency of High BP , Obesity & now cholesterol where i will land up when i'll reach Forty. This thing actually made me understand where i was wrong and from Last one week i am on Boiled food dight . with no salt , no sugar and no oil and i have also addded a daily walk of 4 km. I am hoping to continue like this atleast for next 6 months until my cholestrol is normal and after that ill have a balanced diet. Lets hope i continue on this path and soon ull be able to see a new improved version of me Manuj 2.0

This week we had the auspicious OSI WEEK or Linux Asia and i can tell one thing for sure its getting from bad to worst. Event was totally mismanaged in Bangalore you don't know which presentation is happening where and the event was going nowhere. most of the sessions were empty or had many few listeners . STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO INSTALL KDE 4 ON UBUNTU

Well as KDE 4.0 is out all of us are trying to install the update on our system this three step guide will tell you how to install KDE 4.0 on your ubuntu desktop.

1. First step is to add the KDE 4 Repositories for doing that go to Gnome Menu -System - Administration - software sources and this APT line to the exixting repositories
"deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main". Once you do that it will ask you to reload the list. just do that.

2. Second Step is to remove the KDE 4 Beta if you have ever installed it For doing that open a terminal window and type the following command. "sudo apt-get remove kdelibs5 kde4base-data kde4libs-data" it will ask you to type your password and then it will remove the kde 4 beta packages.

3. Third step is to install the kde 4 packages. For doing that type "sudo aptitude install kde4-core"in a terminal, again it will ask for your password and will start downloading & installing KDE 4.0 but you might recive some warnings if you have installed some KDE apps like amarok or K3B, If you recive warning just type yes and once its done installing KDE 4.o the system will automatically ask you to update those apps. Once you do that you are ready to roll.

Now Just Log out from your system and select KDE 4.0 from session and you are ready with KDE.4 . Please revert if you face any issue while installing or you have any other doubt.

I have joined dell as a Resolution Expert on a decent salary package. The company is great the atmosphere and the work culture is better than all the other organization with which i have worked. Well the New windows live mail is miles ahead of other mail services as per now it gives me 2GB of space but the best part is its interface and features the set of tools you get with it. The interface is divided in many parts and you ave functions like Drag & Drop and a complete right click menu from where you can customize, Delete or add mail to folders. As per now supports Internet Explorer 6 +, Firefox 1.5, and netscape it has compatibilty issue with opera and IE 5.5 but i belive these will be sorted by the time final product is ready.

The new messanger is having some good features like full themable interface, On the fly change of colours. Now you can give offline messages (was in yahoo for long time) File sharing by copy paste and a new recovery mode if there are some errors but something strange is there if u are in work in offline mode in IE messanger will not work. Rest it is a nice messanger but nothing special when compared with other messangers.

It performs very well as it will report immeadiately any sort of unwanted movment in the computer. If any application wants access to internet or gonna modify any important file it will ask you weather you wanna allow it or not all over gives really good protection. It is a big danger for spyware software compaies as microsoft has enterd another market and that to with a real good software.

There are many other products on which i have worked Like Windows One Care Anti Virus, Office 2007 Beta 2 & Vista Beta 2 but they deserve bigger posts and i dont have that much time. Well some other day for them.

Why i love ubuntu well everyone can answer that because its just perfect . Today is my first day with new ubuntu and as usual suse have taken backseat and i dont expect it to come back on my desktop for a long time. The OS is flawless its fast its vibrant its the best. Ubuntu has got a new installer. you boot in the live cd from where you can install from a desktop icon. The installer is easy and the best part is you can continue working on the OS till it get instaled then a reboot and you are up. after installing i rush to cafe where i am updating the OS right now. I also have to install amarok and k3b because they are a must in every linux desktop. for that i need to install kde base which was very easy and flawless from aptget. The OS detects everything which the old ububtu also did. Well i have not even changed my wallpaper so i am going back on it . bye for now

Suse linux 10.1

The distro for which i was waiting from past n number of days is finally out . Suse Linux 10.1 undoubtly the most advanced and feature rich distro ever created. from the time i installed it i love it . Well the distro is great it takes around 40 mins to install on my lapy with Centrino 1.6, 2GB RAM and 40 gb HDD. The installation is simple but if u go for mannual partiton u have to give size in cylinders not in gb or mb which is not good for newcommers rest everything works fine. After installation u get anew blue wallpaper in place of any lizard (Suse trademark) The desktop is neat and clean and with professional looks. Its not as fast as ubuntu but not as slow as fedora. It detects all my hardware perfectly and there were no hasels now come the shady part i was dying to see XGL in action in suse . I had spend two nights to install it on fedora. by default the xgl was not present and i was shocked as everyone said it is a part of suse but after doing some googling i came to know i need to install it from cd manually as it was not part of customized installation as u have to install three packages xgl, xgl hardware pack and compiz which actually has all the tricks u can do with it . I installed it from my dvd and i was able to enable it from control centre and within minutes my desktop was 3d. Then i thought why fedora is a mess . Well in the end everything worked perfect it has all the plugins for mp3, wma etc (fedora grow up) and accordind to me suse 10.1 is undoubtly the best linux distro ever. just give it a try and u will know why. but wait just now i have seen ubuntu is also out and now i have to check it so suse have to leave my desktop as for now . I was looking for a utility with which i can use windows and linux both without restarting my system but most of these utilities were paid and none of them were free but someone told me vmware is free now and the very next minute i was downloading vmware i could download it for windows and linux both either in rpm or source for linux as i use ubuntu i downloaded the source and exe for windows with that u can also download pre configured OS from vmware site that include ubuntu, novell and other distros i installed vmware on my system and within minutes i was able to run multiple OS in a single shell . This is a very useful utility for programers as they can check there softwares on multiple OS without restarting and the best part of vmware is everything works infact it shared my internet but sound was giving some trouble in ubuntu but it worked fine on windows. In the end its a must have utility and you can download it for free from www.vmware.com

Well i am now a Red hat certified engineer after working whole nights for twenty five days i finally got it . Now i want to thank few guys for this first Mayank who was always my ideal in Linux and i want to be a linux geek like maku then my facultys at LLC who bare with me as i was asking questions every second but it all paid isnt it . Right now i am at banglore airport and updating my blog at a wifi zone. Flight is 8:30 but i checked out of my hotl in the morning only so i am at the airport before time well catch u guys later

I reached banglore on 2nd only and move straight towards the institute The LLC is a small place but the faculty is real good i registerd myself paid the fees and started my search for a place to stay i asked the auto wallas and they all suggsted hotels near majestic (bus stand) i earlier used to stay in lavish five stars of Banglore but this time i have to pay the bills so i got a good hotel Saptaghiri palave near majestic. With a good room with attached bathroom and tv and all goodies i was quite happy that i have got a good place to stay then in the evning went to Brigade Road (only happning place in Banglore ) had dinner with sonika and her room mate and reached back to room rest everything is fine i am working hard and i have completed RH033 and right now doing RH133 well see you guys later bye for now.

Well we have sold the house in which we were living for past six months and what we have decided is to live on rent for another two ears unless our appartment is ready which we have booked in celebrity complex in Palam Vihar. Furthur i am ready to drool in banglore i will be reaching banglore on 2nd and my course will start on sixth and i will give my paper on 25th march and will be back by 28th depends upon ticket.

Finally i am on ubuntu now from quite a few time maku was asking me to switch to ubuntu but i was using mandriva and i was very happy with it but finally i moved on ubuntu. It is great i have to do some changes first of all amarok cant live without it. Then few other apps . Updated the kernel and finally few cool wallpapers.The best part of ubuntu is apt get. Well i think i am gonna live with it for quite a long time.

Fedora Core 4

Fedora Core 4 is Out and i downloaded it very next day.It features kernel 2.6.11 with Gnome 2.10 and Latest KDE. Like Suse they have also bundled Open Office 2.0 Beta.The Installation is same and very easy. As soon u boot the system u get the view of Gnome 2.10. Which is real cool. Well now on some tests it supports my system and laptop both with 100% hardware detection including modem. Display etc. No problem with networking and Internet. Same old Multimedia problem with no support for mp3 and mpeg files but the worst part is that they have removed XMMS which was really easy to hack and get back to play mp3. XMMS was also the first choice of migrants from Win platform. Rest the system was flawless and it worked in all respects on my system.

Ubuntu 5.04

Ubuntu 5.04 is out and i recived its cd's via post. Now came time to test it. Installation of OS is not Graphical but easy. it tooks around 15 minutes on my lapy amd 12 minutes on my desktop to install. Ubuntu is a debian based disro. Which is really well build. The OS took really very less time to boot in comparision with other distros. After booting you are faced with Gnome 2.10.1 which is the latest gnome stable release. The OS is beautifully crafted and is equipped with Open Office 1.xxx version (Latest Stable Release) with that u have firefox, Ximian etc. The OS is good for personal use or could work with a normal office where word processing, Surfing are the basic requirments. finally a good OS which lacks amorok (must for music lovers). rest everything is intact and ready for use.
Note - KDE version is also avilable which is called kubuntu

Red Hat Summit has started in New Orleans. This is first summit by Red Hat which has been highly publicized. Red hat is trying real hard to fight against companies like novell, Mandriva, Sun etc which are grasping the Linux Market share very rapidly. The event is focussed on showcasing new open source technologies, improving relationship with existing customers and making new customers (of Course). According to my sources Red Hat will soon start nationwide expo's and roadshow's one phase of which has already ended. Well let us see Red Hat will remain on top or Novell will change the senario.

Suse 9.3 much hyped by many bloggers but not as great as i expected the interface is clean and definately better then last issue but major prob in multimedia. Divx videos r not played. problem with amorek and real player they dont play mp3. rest some prob with kde. It dose not respond some time finally i am back on mandriva

This happens with me when i dont want to happen it at all. I was going to give a guest lecture on linux at NC and when i booted my laptop suddenly Kernel Panic error comes and i was shocked i dont know what to do. Then i calmed myself and booted my system using KNOPIX But it dose not read my Linux Drives. I tried mounting them but no result. Then i have to download the whole presentation and present it on Knoppix. But what can i say Linux Makes the blender of my day and then it saves me. If i would have been using windows then i would have been in a complete sorry state. Well now i am singing one of my favourate song so byeee. What is Love ? Baby dont Hurt me

Well the confrence was not great but out of this world. As planned we had a LUG corner where anyone can come and try diffrent flavours of LINUX. Our corner was the bussiest all around. There we have round the clock discussion on OPEN SOURCE. Then on 10th i have a presentation Titled LINUX, OPEN SOURCE & GNU. The presentation was out of this world and questions come in numbers from all around and after the presentation people make a group around me and some guys thought that they are gonna kill me but crowd was controlled. After that i got offer from punjab University and a instiute from karnal to come and speak at there places and i was really on top of the world. I will soon post pics of the event.

Nero Linux 2.0 is out. It is a CD/DVD Burning tool for LINUX and if you are using Nero 6.3 Ultra edition then you can download it for free from http://ww2.nero.com/us/NeroLINUX.html Well as for the product it is a easy to use App and has few features which K3b lacks. The best part is you can easily write and rewrite multisession cd's which was earlier not possible in Linux. Well finally a good product i rate it 3 out of 5

Well our wate for Open Office Final will soon be over as Open Office 2.0 Beta Hits the stand. This one is definately less buggy then the previouse test releases as earlier i was very irretated with frequent crashes. 2.0 Beta is definately workable and it shows you how the final avtaar will look like. The best part about 2.0 is its vast collection of Clip Arts, Pics etc which was earlier only in Star Office. It is also now more good Looking and It Starts up slightly faster (atleast on my system) . OK download it now from www.openoffice.org its an order.

This is what i have seen and now i belive Linux is changing earlier it was more of a network oriented OS but now the company's like Mandreke, Suse and Knoppix are making a diffreance making it more ready for home desktop for non geeks like 90 % of computer users. These company are making real effort for making linux ready for dektop so come on guy's try them.
I will recommend you ELX Linux becouse first of all it has a windows like interface and secondaly it is very easy to use and install OS and last it is an indian DIstro. So you can download it from www.elxlinux.com .
